Mumbai, 20th June. IIT Bombay has imposed fines on eight students for their involvement in staging a play titled ‘Raahovan’ during the Performing Arts Festival on March 31. The play, criticized for its alleged parody of the Hindu epic Ramayana and derogatory references to Hindu beliefs, sparked formal complaints leading to a disciplinary committee meeting.
The institute fined four students ₹1.2 lakh each and four others ₹40,000 each, with additional sanctions for graduating and junior students. The penalties include restrictions on gymkhana awards and hostel facilities, effective July 20, 2024.
The controversy escalated on social media after criticism from groups like ‘IIT B for Bharat,’ accusing the play of mocking Lord Ram and religious sentiments. Supporters of the disciplinary action praised the institute’s stance, while critics argued it curtailed academic freedom.
The Performing Arts Festival at IIT Bombay is an annual cultural event celebrating student talent across various art forms.
