New Delhi, 17th Sept. In her first remarks after being named the next chief minister of Delhi, senior AAP leader Atishi expressed sadness over Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation but vowed to work towards bringing him back to the position.
Atishi, who currently holds several key portfolios in the Delhi government, thanked Kejriwal for his trust in her, noting that only a party like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would have given a “first-time politician” such responsibilities.
Kejriwal proposed Atishi as his successor during a meeting of AAP legislators, where all MLAs unanimously agreed to the decision. Addressing the media, Atishi said, “I will work with one goal for the next few months—to bring back Kejriwal as chief minister.” She also requested party members to refrain from congratulating her, calling it a “sad occasion.”
Expressing her gratitude to Kejriwal, Atishi remarked that had she been in any other party, she wouldn’t have even received a ticket to contest elections. She referred to Kejriwal as her “elder brother” and said that his resignation had left people angry.
Atishi will meet Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena at Raj Niwas later in the day, following Kejriwal’s resignation, paving the way for her appointment as Delhi’s third woman chief minister after Sheila Dikshit and Sushma Swaraj.
During her address, Atishi also took a swipe at the central government, saying the Supreme Court’s recent bail to Kejriwal in the excise policy-linked corruption case was a “slap on the face” of the BJP-led Centre, accusing it of using agencies like the CBI and ED to target him.
Atishi pledged to lead under Kejriwal’s guidance and ensure the safety and welfare of Delhi’s citizens during her tenure.
