Kallakurichi, 22 June. In the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu, four more patients who were receiving treatment passed away on Friday and Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths to 54. Six women and forty-eight males make up the victims, according to government data. ANI was informed by Kallakurichi district collector M S Prasanth that 140 patients out of the 193 who ingested the illicit liquor are safe as of right now.
Seven persons have been taken into custody by police in relation to this investigation. The Tamil Nadu police’s CBI CID department is now looking into the matter.
The Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to submit a comprehensive report outlining the measures implemented to prevent the sale of unlawful arrack inside the state, while criticizing the administration for the hooch disaster. Judges D Krishnakumar and K Kumaresh Babu, who made up a division bench, issued the order while deferring the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation filed by AIADMK legal wing secretary I S Inbadurai until June 26. The PIL requested that the state government order the CBI to take up the investigation into the crime and offense of accused individuals selling unlawful arracks in the Kallakurichi district.
The bench further stated that the report ought to include the measures taken in response to the Kallakurichi hooch catastrophe, in addition to those taken in response to a similar occurrence that occurred in Villupuram’s Marakanam last year.
During the hearing, the bench noted verbally that since this issue involved people’s lives, it was important to find out how many cases the state had filed in the previous year and what steps the police had made to stop the selling of illegal arrack. Even prior to this catastrophe, the bench claimed to have read a news article about illegal attacks being marketed in Kallakurichi.
After visiting patients receiving treatment at various government medical facilities, he told reporters in Puducherry that of the deceased, 25 passed away at the Kallakurichi government hospital, 3 at JIPMER in Puducherry, 16 at Salem Government Medical College Hospital, and 4 at Villupuram Government Medical College Hospital.
