New Delhi, 10th August. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, will attend the ‘Sugar Conclave and National Efficiency Award 2022-23’ ceremony as the Chief Guest on Saturday, August 10, 2024, in New Delhi.
The event, organized by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) Limited, will see Shah bestowing National Efficiency Awards to cooperative sugar factories in eight areas of cooperation.
The NFCSF, an apex body that includes 260 cooperative sugar factories and nine state sugar federations across the country, is hosting the event. The awards are part of the organization’s annual initiative to evaluate and recognize the performance of cooperative sugar factories in various aspects, including Sugarcane Development, Technical Efficiency, Financial Management, Sugarcane Crushing, Sugar Recovery, and Sugar Export.
This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity Through Cooperation), under which the Ministry of Cooperation has implemented several measures to strengthen cooperative sugar factories. These measures include providing grant-in-aid to the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) for the enhancement of cooperative sugar mills.
A total of 92 cooperative sugar factories from across the country participated in the Efficiency Awards 2022-23 competition. The entries included 38 factories from Maharashtra, 11 each from Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, 10 from Tamil Nadu, eight each from Punjab and Haryana, four from Karnataka, and one each from Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
To ensure a level playing field, the sugar sector was divided into two groups based on sugar production capacity. Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka were placed in the first group due to their higher sugar production levels (above 10 percent), while the remaining states formed the second group. A total of 53 factories participated from the first group, and 39 from the second. The awards policy also follows a “one prize per factory” rule to encourage competitiveness and efficiency.
The conclave will be held at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi and will also include Union Ministers of State for Cooperation, Krishan Pal Gurjar and Murlidhar Mohol, along with Chairpersons, Vice-Chairpersons, and Managing Directors of cooperative sugar mills from across the country. Additionally, ministers from the ministerial group on sugar/ethanol and senior officials related to the sugar sector from both the central and state governments have been invited.
The event will also include the NFCSF’s annual general body meeting and a technical seminar addressing key issues affecting the sugar sector. Eminent experts will lead discussions on the challenges and opportunities within the sector.
