Guwahati, 12th March.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Tuesday that he would step down from his position if anyone who did not apply for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is granted citizenship.

His remarks came after protests broke out in Assam, with opposition parties criticizing the BJP government for implementing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) on Monday. This act allows for the granting of citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

During an event in Sivasagar, the chief minister declared, “I am a son of Assam, and if even one person who did not apply for the NRC is given citizenship, I will be the first to resign.”

Protesters fear that thousands of people will enter the state following the implementation of the CAA. Sarma stated, “If this occurs, I will be the first to protest.”

Sarma emphasized that the CAA is not new and has been in place before. He mentioned that it is now time for applications to be submitted on the portal.

“The data on the portal will reveal the truth, showing whether the claims of those opposing the Act are accurate or not,” Sarma added.

With the issuance of CAA rules, the central government will begin granting Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014. This includes Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians. The law could not be enforced earlier due to the absence of notified rules.
