New Delhi, 19th Dec. A high-powered committee, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met on Wednesday to select the next chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), sources confirmed. Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, as the leaders of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, were also part of the meeting. However, they are expected to submit a dissent note, citing the lack of prior information on the names being considered for the role.

The position of NHRC chairperson has been vacant since June 1, following the completion of Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra’s tenure. Justice Mishra, a former Supreme Court judge, served as the chairperson from June 2021 until his retirement. The selection committee also includes the Lok Sabha Speaker, the home minister, and the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani currently serves as the acting chairperson.

The NHRC chairperson is typically a former Chief Justice of India or a retired Supreme Court judge, appointed by the president based on the committee’s recommendation.
