New Delhi, 10th Feb. The DMK and Congress walked out of the Lok Sabha on Friday after Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the opposition is spreading “wrong information” about AIIMS Madurai, as he took strong action against medical colleges that lack faculty, infrastructure, and patients.
In response to a follow-up question about AIIMS Madurai, he stated that medical courses are still being held at the institute, and that Rs. 1,900 crore has been allocated for infrastructure construction.
When DMK members claimed that the AIIMS Madurai was not ready, Mandaviya accused them of misleading the House and the public.
“Some people want to do politics on everything. I know why they are doing this as I have taken strong action against those medical colleges which don’t have faculty, infrastructure and patients. This is the reaction to that,” he asserted.
“Such illegalities will not be allowed by the Modi government. We will continue to take such strong action against delinquent medical colleges,” he said amidst strong protests by the DMK and Congress MPs.
Some members of the ruling BJP also spoke out in support of Mr Mandaviya, raising their voices while standing at their seats.
The DMK’s visibly agitated Dayanidhi Maran stated, “Who is he to talk like this”. “He is blackmailing us, he is threatening us,” he charged.
After some time, Speaker Om Birla tried to calm down the agitated opposition members by saying he would evaluate the minister’s statement to see if it was appropriate or not.
The DMK and Congress members protested by walking out of the House.
Earlier, the health minister stated that the Modi government has taken steps to expand medical education in the country so that students do not have to study abroad.
He stated that the total number of medical colleges in the country was 387 in 2014 and has now increased to 657.
The central government has relaxed the rules for the establishment of medical colleges, which can be established by state governments or private entities.
“In just one year in 2022, We have given approval for setting up 37 medical colleges while 89 applications are now being examined,” he said.
