Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda commended the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for its significant strides in enhancing food safety standards across the country.

During a comprehensive review meeting at the FSSAI headquarters on Monday, Minister Nadda highlighted the critical importance of food safety in safeguarding the well-being of citizens and underscored the need for empowering consumers with evidence-based information.

Minister Nadda emphasized that while regulatory frameworks are essential, achieving comprehensive food safety goals requires proactive communication and behavioral change among consumers. “In a diverse nation like India, understanding regional dietary habits is crucial to formulating effective policies,” he stated, urging FSSAI to align its strategies accordingly.

He praised FSSAI’s recent initiatives, noting substantial progress since his last visit in 2016. “FSSAI has made remarkable advancements in strengthening the food safety ecosystem,” Minister Nadda remarked, citing the agency’s leadership in promoting millets and CODEX standards. He also lauded FSSAI’s efforts in training street vendors and creating awareness about food safety through campaigns like the Eat Right India initiative.

During the meeting, Minister Nadda launched several key initiatives aimed at bolstering food safety practices nationwide. These include the release of critical manuals on microbiological examination of food and water, and guidelines for food analysis as per FSS Act, 2006. Additionally, the ‘Food Safety Bytes’ series of informative videos was unveiled to educate the public about safe food practices.

Highlighting the need for collaboration, Minister Nadda called for proactive engagement with industry stakeholders to advance healthy eating initiatives. “Let us make industry partners in our efforts towards promoting healthy eating habits,” he urged.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Health Ministry and FSSAI, with over 1000 officers participating virtually from regional and branch offices across the country. As a symbolic gesture towards environmental sustainability, Minister Nadda planted a mango sapling on the FSSAI premises, underscoring the commitment to holistic health and well-being through food safety measures.
