Kolkata, 20th August. Amid ongoing investigations and widespread protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Durga Devi, mother-in-law of the accused Sanjay Roy, has claimed that more individuals may have been involved in the crime. Speaking to ANI on Monday, Devi stated that Roy could not have committed the crime alone.

Describing her strained relationship with Roy, Devi recounted her daughter’s troubled experience. She revealed that Roy had previously thrashed her daughter, leading to a police complaint. “My relations with him were very tense,” Devi said. “Initially, everything was good for 6 months. When she was 3 months pregnant, he caused a miscarriage. He thrashed her, and a police complaint was registered for the same. Following this, my daughter continued being ill, and I bore all her expenses for medicines.” Devi further added, “Sanjay was not good. Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won’t speak about the crime. He could not have done it alone. He can’t do it alone.”

The brutal rape and murder of the trainee doctor have ignited significant outrage and protests across several cities, with widespread calls for justice and severe punishment for the accused. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, with a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud scheduled to hear the matter today.

Additionally, the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital from January 2021 to the present. The SIT, headed by IG Pranav Kumar and supported by Murshidabad Range DIG Waquar Reza, West Bengal CID DIG Soma Das Mitra, and Kolkata (Central) DC Indira Mukherjee, is tasked with accessing relevant documents and submitting an initial report to the State Government within a month.
