Chandigarh, 23rd Dec. In a landmark move to bolster the agricultural sector, the Haryana Government has issued a notification to procure 24 crops from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The decision, announced by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and formalized by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, is a significant step towards ensuring fair prices for farmers’ produce and protecting them from market uncertainties.
The move adds ten additional crops, including Ragi, Soybean, Nigerseed, Safflower, Barley, Maize, Jowar, Jute, Copra, and Summer Moong, to the list of 14 crops already procured under MSP. These include staple and cash crops like Paddy, Bajra, Kharif Moong, Urd, Arhar, Til, Cotton, Groundnut, Wheat, Mustard, Gram, Masur, Sunflower, and Sugarcane.
Key Highlights of the Notification:
- Comprehensive MSP Coverage: The expanded list aligns with the Central Government’s MSP policy, guaranteeing government-announced prices for all 24 notified crops.
- Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for Sugarcane: Sugarcane procurement will continue under the FRP system, offering stable returns to farmers.
- Digital Registration: Procurement will be conducted only for eligible farmers registered on the Meri Fasal Mera Byora Portal, ensuring transparency and accountability in the process.
- Market Protection: By guaranteeing MSP, the government aims to shield farmers from market price fluctuations and ensure their efforts are adequately rewarded.
Chief Minister Saini emphasized the state’s commitment to the welfare of the farming community, calling the initiative a transformative step towards sustainable agriculture. “By extending MSP support to more crops, we are not just securing the livelihoods of our farmers but also strengthening the agricultural economy,” he said.
The notification has been lauded by farmer groups, who see it as a crucial measure to safeguard their interests. Experts believe the decision will boost crop diversification and encourage farmers to grow non-traditional crops like Ragi and Soybean, which are now covered under MSP.
