Guterres strongly deplores terrorist attack in Mali

UNITED NATIONS – UN head António Guterres on Thursday has called for accountability after a “despicable” terrorist attack in Mali, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric issued a statement in New York.

According to international media reports, scores of people were killed in Bamako, on Tuesday when Islamic militants attacked several locations, including a military police academy.

The violence forced the authorities to temporarily close the international airport, media reported.

The militant group JNIM which is linked to Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility.

Mr. Guterres strongly condemned the terrorist attack, the statement said.

He called on the Malian transitional Government “to ensure that those responsible for this despicable attack are held to account.”

Mr. Guterres extended his sincere condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the transitional Government and the people of Mali, the statement read.

It added that he wished a speedy recovery to those injured, including one UN guard unit member.

Over 20 UN agencies are in Mali, supporting the Malian authorities to achieve SDGs. .

World body also maintained a peacekeeping mission in Mali as MINUSMA, which ceased operations in December 2023.
