Ahmedabad, 14th Nov. The Congress released two lists of 39 candidates for the Gujarat Assembly elections on Sunday.
Jignesh Mevani of the Vadgam constituency is one of the 39 candidates on two lists that the Congress released on Sunday.
Jignesh Mevani, a Dalit leader, was elected as an Independent candidate from Vadgam in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district in 2017.
The Congress first released its fifth list, which included Botad’s Manhar Patel in place of Ramesh Mer. Later that evening, it released a list of 33 candidates, bringing the total number of declared candidates to 142.
The candidates included in the fifth list were Divyesh Chavda from Gariadhar, Mansukhbhai Kalariya from Rajkot West, Chhattarsinh Gunjariya from Dhrangadhra, and Jayanti Jerajbhai Patel from Morbi.
Mevani from the Vadgam (SC) seat, Thakor Mohansinh from Mansa, Baldevji Thakor from Kalol, Imran Khedawala from Jamalpur-Khadia, Amit Chavda from Anklav, Bal Kishen Patel from Dabhoi, and Sukhrambhai Rathva from the Jetpur (ST) seat were among the 33 candidates on the sixth list that the Congress fielded.
The names of 43 candidates for the elections were announced in the first list that the Congress released on November 4.
The party released a new list of 46 names on November 10. On Friday, it announced a list of seven candidates, one of whom was a stand-in for the previously announced candidate. On Saturday, the fourth list of nine candidates was made public.
In Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, where the BJP has held power for more than 20 years, the Congress is working to overthrow the saffron party.
The 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be chosen in two rounds of voting on December 1 and 5. On December 8, counting of votes will be done.
