New Delhi, 4th Sept. In a huge boost to local defence manufacturing, the Indian government has approved 10 major capital acquisition proposals totaling ₹1,44,716 crore. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, gave the green light for these projects, which aim to modernize and enhance the capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.
Among the approved proposals is the procurement of future-ready combat vehicles (FRCVs), including a state-of-the-art Main Battle Tank designed for superior mobility, all-terrain capability, multilayered protection, and advanced firepower. The FRCV will integrate real-time situational awareness to enhance battlefield effectiveness.
The DAC also sanctioned air defence fire control radars, essential for detecting and tracking aerial threats and providing accurate firing solutions. Additionally, the proposal includes Forward Repair Teams (Tracked), capable of performing in-situ repairs during mechanized operations.
A significant portion of the approved funds will be directed towards indigenous sources, with 99% of the investment falling under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ and ‘Buy (Indian-indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured)’ categories. This decision highlights the government’s commitment to supporting local defence production and technology development.
Furthermore, three proposals were approved to strengthen the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). These include the procurement of Dornier-228 aircraft, Next Generation Fast Patrol Vessels, and Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels. These assets will enhance the ICG’s capabilities in maritime surveillance, patrolling, search and rescue operations, and disaster relief.
The Defence Minister also paid tribute to late Indian Coast Guard DG Rakesh Pal, who passed away on August 18. Pal was a valued member of the DAC and was honored for his contributions to national security.
This comprehensive acquisition plan is set to significantly enhance India’s defence infrastructure while promoting local manufacturing and technological advancements.
