Prayagraj, 15th April. Asad Ahmad, the son of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, was laid to rest at Kasari Masari graveyard here on Saturday amid heavy police security, with only a few distant relatives and locals allowed inside. The burial lasted for an hour, police said.

“The last rites of Asad Ahmad have been completed, and it went for an hour. A few distant relatives of Atiq and some people of the locality were allowed to go to the graveyard. This was necessary from the security point of view,” Joint Commissioner of Police, Prayagraj, Akash Kulhari said.

Earlier, Asad’s uncle, Usman, arrived at the cemetery with his nephew’s body.

The media was not permitted to enter the heavily guarded graveyard.

On Friday, Atiq requested permission from a magistrate to attend his son’s funeral. His lawyer, Manish Khanna, said that the request had been sent to the remand magistrate because Friday was a holiday due to Ambedkar Jayanti.

However, the burial occurred before Atiq’s application could be heard by the chief judicial magistrate on Saturday.

Asad and his accomplice Ghulam, who were both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, were killed in a gunfight with Uttar Pradesh Police near Jhansi on Thursday.

Asad, the third of Atiq Ahmad’s five sons, had been missing since the Umesh Pal murder case.

Among Atiq’s other sons, the eldest, Umar, is imprisoned in Lucknow, while the second, Ali, is imprisoned in Naini Central Jail in separate cases. Ahjam, the fourth son, and Aban, the youngest son, are being cared for in a juvenile home in Prayagraj. According to Janu Khan, who claimed to have dug Asad’s grave, Atiq’s parents’ remains are also buried in the same graveyard (Kasari Masari). Atiq is currently serving a life sentence in the kidnapping of Umesh Pal in 2006.
