Fresh Plea in SC Seeks SIT Probe into Murshidabad Violence

New Delhi: A fresh public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), under the apex court’s supervision, to probe the recent violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. The petition also seeks a response from the West Bengal government over the alleged failure to maintain law and order in the state.

Filed by Supreme Court advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha, the plea raises concerns about the deteriorating security situation following a wave of violence that erupted in the Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj, and Jangipur areas of Murshidabad since Friday, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to several others.

Earlier in the day, Additional Director General (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim informed that the situation was gradually returning to normal. “Shops have started to open and people are returning. So far, 19 families have returned to their homes. Both Malda and Murshidabad district administrations are working closely to ensure the safe return of those who had fled,” he said.

So far, 210 people have been arrested in connection with the violence. Shamim urged citizens not to fall for rumours, which he said could reignite tensions. “Rumour-mongering must stop if we are to maintain peace,” he said, adding that the administration was committed to restoring full normalcy.

Addressing the gruesome incident involving the murder of a father and son, Shamim stated that a separate case would be filed. “All involved — whether they perpetrated the act or witnessed it without intervening — will be held accountable. No one will be spared,” he asserted.

Police have been making public announcements urging shopkeepers to resume business and encouraging displaced residents to return home. Authorities are hopeful of restoring peace in the area in the coming days.
