Paris, 29th August. French authorities have charged Telegram CEO Pavel Durov with several serious violations, including permitting child pornography, drug trafficking, and fraud on the messaging app. Durov has been barred from leaving France but was released after four days of questioning, having posted bail of 5 million euros (approximately ₹46.7 million).
The investigation, led by French prosecutor Laure Beccuau, centers on allegations that Telegram allowed the organized dissemination of child pornography, drug trafficking, and fraud. The platform is also accused of failing to cooperate with authorities, engaging in money laundering, and providing cryptographic services to criminals.
Durov, who was arrested on August 24 at Le Bourget airport near Paris, was granted temporary release on the condition that he remain in France and report to a police station twice a week. The preliminary charges include complicity in managing an online platform that facilitated illicit activities.
In response to the allegations, Telegram has dismissed them as “absurd” and defended Durov, asserting that he “has nothing to hide” and frequently travels across Europe. The company emphasized that it is unreasonable to hold the platform or its owner responsible for misuse.
Additionally, Durov is under investigation for alleged serious violence towards one of his children, a matter that also involves a separate complaint filed in Switzerland by the child’s mother last year.
As the investigation continues, Durov’s legal team and Telegram maintain their stance against the accusations, highlighting ongoing concerns about the platform’s role in criminal activities.
