Dehradun, 18th June. The fifth Vidhan Sabha’s four-day budget session was adjourned sine die on Friday.
Ritu Khanduri Bhushan, the Assembly speaker, congratulated all members of the opposition and treasury benches for their cooperation. She stated that members of both parties engaged in meaningful talks about a variety of significant topics affecting the state and residents.
During the four-day budget session, the house was in session for a total of 22 hours and 43 minutes. The session had a total of 573 questions.
There were 14 short notice questions, four of which were answered, 190 starred questions, 61 of which were answered, and 339 unstarred questions, 165 of which were answered. Three questions were maintained under consideration while 17 were dismissed.
Earlier in the day, during the proceedings, opposition members raised a number of issues, including power outages in several sections of the state.
Bhuwan Kapdi, the deputy leader of the opposition, opined that the state is experiencing a significant electricity problem, with unscheduled power outages in several places. The government is purchasing expensive electricity since several hydro power projects are delayed, but the administration is not ready to allocate the necessary funding for the hydro power projects, he alleged.
Sumit Hridayesh, an MLA from Haldwani, said the state government should make it easier for solar power parks to be built on barren terrain.
Virendra Kumar, a Jhabreda MLA, claimed that the government’s shortsightedness is to blame for the electricity deficit. He said that the power department is severely understaffed.
In response to questions and statements from opposition members, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prem Chand Agrawal noted that electricity production has been hampered by a global lack of coal and gas. This scenario has had an impact on the state as well.
After the Covid-19 outbreak, the minister added, there was a high demand for power, while the Russia-Ukraine conflict resulted in a gas scarcity. He said that seven million units of electricity is not being produced. According to the minister, the State government was successful in obtaining electricity from Meghalaya, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh to satisfy the high demand for electricity in April.
