Prayagraj, 8th Jan. Keshari Nath Tripathi, the former Governor of West Bengal, Bihar, and two other states, died on Sunday at his Prayagraj home in Uttar Pradesh.
Tripathi, a senior BJP leader, was 88 years old.
A party leader said the veteran politician, who was a three-time speaker of the UP Legislative Assembly, was hospitalized for a fractured hand as well as old-age-related ailments and breathing problems.
“Tripathiji was in the ICU for a short while and his condition has improved following which he was brought home. Today at around 5 AM he breathed his last,” the official told the news agency over the phone.
Tripathi, who was born in Allahabad on November 10, 1934, was the Governor of West Bengal from July 2014 to July 2019. Prior to that, he served as Governor of Bihar, Meghalaya, and Mizoram for brief periods.
He served six terms in the UP legislative assembly and was the state’s Cabinet minister of institutional finance and sales tax during the Janata Party regime from 1977 to 1979.
Tripathi, a poet and author, was a senior advocate at Allahabad High Court and served as BJP president in Uttar Pradesh for a time.
