Itanagar, 9th March. Former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Nabam Tuki, has resigned as the president of the state Congress ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections. The decision comes in the wake of three Congress MLAs defecting to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), prompting Tuki to take moral responsibility for the situation.
The resignation was submitted by Tuki to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Friday, as confirmed by APCC general secretary Gyamar Tana. Tana stated that Tuki opted to step down from his position due to his inability to prevent the defection of the MLAs to other political parties, citing moral grounds for his decision.
Tuki, who represents the Sagalee assembly constituency in the state, faced the challenge of retaining party members amidst a shifting political landscape.
Earlier this month, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Lombo Tayeng, a veteran six-time MLA from Mebo in East Siang district, announced his defection to the BJP. This move was followed by two additional Congress MLAs, Ninong Ering and Wanglin Lowangdong, joining the BJP last month.
