Imphal, 5th July. In the early hours of Friday, a firing incident targeted an under-construction religious installation at Manipur’s Imphal, as reported by police officials. The incident occurred around 12:30 am at the Palace Compound area, prompting heightened security measures in the vicinity.
Authorities have confirmed that the perpetrators behind the shooting have not yet been identified. Security has been bolstered with the deployment of central forces at the site where the incident took place, aimed at maintaining order and investigating the matter further.
This incident comes in the wake of a similar event in Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir, where an alleged vandalization of a place of worship sparked protests last month. Local authorities responded by detaining 12 individuals and forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident. Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Paul Mahajan assured the community of swift and stringent action against those responsible.
The vandalism in Reasi, discovered by a visitor in the Dharmari area, prompted joint protests by members of both Hindu and Muslim communities. Protesters denounced the incident as an attempt to sow discord and disrupt longstanding communal harmony in the district. They blocked main roads, staged sit-ins, and demanded justice through the apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.
Senior police officials assured the demonstrators that an FIR had been filed and that efforts were underway to apprehend the perpetrators. The protests concluded peacefully following these assurances.
