Fire Breaks Out Onboard Indian Naval Ship Brahmaputra; Severe Listing Reported

Mumbai, 23rd July. An accident occurred on the Indian Naval Ship Brahmaputra, a multi-role frigate, on the evening of July 21 while the vessel was undergoing refit at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai (ND (Mbi)).

A fire broke out onboard, which was promptly managed by the ship’s crew with assistance from firefighters at ND (Mbi) and other ships in the harbor. By the morning of July 22, the fire was successfully extinguished.

Following the fire, the ship experienced severe listing to the port side in the afternoon. Despite extensive efforts to stabilize the vessel, it could not be returned to an upright position and is currently resting on one side alongside its berth.

All personnel have been accounted for, except one junior sailor, whose whereabouts are still being investigated. The Indian Navy has ordered an inquiry to determine the cause of the incident and assess any residual risks.
