New Delhi, 10th April. Film director Vivek Agnihotri on Monday appeared before the Delhi High Court in a suo motu criminal contempt case in relation to a tweet he posted in 2018 about Justice S Murlidhar, who had quashed Gautam Navlakha’s transit remand.

The court ordered Vivek Agnihotri to appear in person on the last date of the hearing.

Vivek Agnihotri offered his unconditional apology for the tweets he posted in 2018.

Agnihotri’s appearance was noted by the bench of Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Vikas Mahajan, who noted that he had made an unconditional apology and expressed his remorse.

Court also stated that he offers an unconditional apology for his allegedly offensive Twitter statement. As a result, he is discharged.

The court also warned them to be more cautious in the future.

Earlier on March 16, the bench took note of the December 6 order in which Agnihotri was ordered to appear before the court.

On December 6, Agnihotri offered his unconditional apology for the tweets he posted in 2018.

The bench had asked Agnihotri to attend the next hearing.

The court initiated this contempt case against Agnihotri and Reserve Bank of India Governor S Gurumurthy on its own initiative.

Agnihotri’s counsel stated that Agnihotri was suffering from a fever and thus was unable to appear in court.

Following that, the bench ordered him to appear in person on the next date.

Agnihotri’s counsel claimed in an affidavit that his client deleted the tweets.

However, amicus curiae objected to the submission, claiming that the tweets were deleted by the social media platform Twitter, not by him.

According to the bench, “We are asking him to remain present because he is contemnor. Does he have any difficulty if he has to express remorse in person? The remorse cannot always be express by way of an affidavit.”
