Mumbai, 23rd November.:  As the counting of votes for the Maharashtra Assembly elections progresses, Fahad Ahmad, the candidate from Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction, is leading against Sana Malik of the rival Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction in the Anushakti Nagar constituency. According to the Election Commission, Ahmad is ahead by 2,751 votes as of 12:40 pm after 15 rounds of counting, with five rounds still to go.

Anushakti Nagar falls within the Mumbai South-Central Lok Sabha constituency. Sana Malik, daughter of incumbent MLA Nawab Malik, is facing tough competition from Ahmad, who joined Sharad Pawar’s faction just days before the elections after a political stint with the Samajwadi Party. Ahmad, 32, is married to Bollywood actor Swara Bhasker and holds degrees from Aligarh Muslim University and Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

Mahayuti Heads for Landslide

Meanwhile, across Maharashtra, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance appears poised for a sweeping victory, with trends indicating a landslide win. The alliance includes the BJP, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP.

The polling for the 288-member assembly took place on Wednesday, recording a turnout of over 66%, higher than the 61% turnout in the 2019 elections.

Key Alliances and Battle Lines

The contest primarily pits the Mahayuti against the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), a coalition of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, the Congress, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP.

The BJP contested 148 seats, the largest number among all parties, with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena fighting for 80 and Ajit Pawar’s NCP for 53.

The Congress fielded candidates in 103 constituencies, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena in 89, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP in 87.

Despite confident exit polls predicting a Mahayuti win, MVA leaders are hoping for surprises in certain constituencies, like Anushakti Nagar, where intra-factional battles are intensifying the race.
