Ex-RG Kar Medical College Principal Suspended After CBI Arrest

Kolkata, 3rd Sept. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, has been suspended by the West Bengal Health Minister following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). His suspension is linked to a series of serious allegations, including financial irregularities and malpractice during his tenure at the college.

Ghosh’s arrest comes in the wake of an ongoing investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a young doctor at the college last month. He has been placed in police custody for eight days, though the CBI initially sought a 10-day custody.

Three others, including vendors Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara, and security guard Afsar Ali, were also arrested in connection with the case. The financial irregularities came to light after a petition by former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, Akhtar Ali, who accused Ghosh of illegal activities such as the sale of unclaimed corpses, trafficking of biomedical waste, and accepting commissions from medicine and equipment suppliers.

Additionally, allegations surfaced that Ghosh pressured students to pay between ₹5 lakh and ₹8 lakh to pass their exams.

Sandip Ghosh had already been suspended by the Indian Medical Association prior to his arrest. His controversial appointment to Calcutta National Medical College was met with resistance, with students locking him out of the Principal’s office long before a Supreme Court order on the matter.
