Chandigarh, 16th September. Amarinder Singh, former Punjab chief minister and the Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) Chief, will join the BJP next week, a party spokesperson announced on Friday.
Singh will also merge his newly formed party Punjab Lok Congress with the BJP.
Captain Amarinder Singh, 80, founded the Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) last year after leaving the Congress following his unceremonious exit as Chief Minister.
Singh will join the BJP in Delhi, where he will be welcomed by party president JP Nadda and other leaders.
Seven former MLAs and one former MP who joined the PLC will be among those following Singh on Monday, according to PLC spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal.
Other PLC office bearers and district presidents will join the BJP at a separate event next week in Chandigarh, Baliawal said.
Singh, who recently returned from spinal surgery in London, has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the last two weeks.
Singh stated that he had a very productive discussion with Shah on various issues related to national security, rising cases of narco-terrorism in Punjab, and the future roadmap for the state’s overall holistic development on September 12.
Before leaving for London, Singh informed senior Punjab BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal of his intention to merge his party with the BJP. Grewal stated at the time that the former chief minister would announce the merger upon his return.
The former chief minister is a descendant of the Patiala royal family. He left the Congress last year after being replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi.
However, the Congress was defeated in the February Assembly elections, with Channi losing both of the seats he ran for.
The PLC ran in coalition with the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyuk), led by Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. However, none of its candidates were successful, with Singh himself losing in his hometown of Patiala Urban.
