Nalbari, 10th August. Former BJP MLA Ashok Sarma, along with hundreds of his supporters, joined the Congress on Friday. The event, held in Nalbari, saw Sarma taking membership in the presence of senior Congress leaders including Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupen Kumar Borah, and Debabrata Saikia.
Sarma, who has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) along with his family, described his decision to join Congress as difficult but necessary, citing dissatisfaction with BJP’s direction, particularly under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He condemned the BJP’s focus on “Hindu-Muslim politics” and expressed concern over the party’s attitude towards Congress.
Congress leaders welcomed Sarma’s move, with Gaurav Gogoi predicting it would cause a significant impact on the BJP in Assam. Sarma had previously resigned from BJP, expressing frustration with the party’s leadership. His joining is seen as a significant shift in Assam’s political landscape.
