New Delhi- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied by the European Union College of Commissioners, arrived in New Delhi on Thursday for a two-day visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks the first-ever visit of the entire EU College of Commissioners to India, signifying a new milestone in India-EU ties.
“Touchdown in Delhi with my team of Commissioners. In an era of conflicts and intense competition, you need trusted friends. For Europe, India is such a friend and a strategic ally. I’ll discuss with Narendra Modi how to take our strategic partnership to the next level,” von der Leyen posted on X after landing.
This is her third visit to India, following her official bilateral visit in April 2022 and participation in the G20 Leaders’ Summit in September 2023. She was welcomed at the airport by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel.
Prime Minister Modi is set to hold delegation-level talks with the European Commission President on Friday. The visit will also include the second ministerial meeting of the India–EU Trade and Technology Council and bilateral discussions between European Commissioners and their Indian counterparts.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the significance of the visit, stating, “India and the European Union have been strategic partners since 2004, with deepening cooperation across various sectors. As the partnership enters its third decade, this visit will further strengthen bilateral relations.”
During her stay, von der Leyen is also scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday.
