Kolkata, 29th June.
Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud emphasized the need for enhanced gender representation within the legal profession, while commending recent strides during the bicentenary celebration of the Bar Library Club of the Calcutta High Court.

Highlighting significant progress, CJI Chandrachud noted that over 60% of recruits in competitive exams for the lowest judicial service levels across various states are now women, reflecting India’s evolving social landscape. Despite these advancements, he emphasized the ongoing necessity to ensure that judicial institutions are truly inclusive and supportive for all.

Addressing challenges faced by female legal professionals, Chandrachud lamented the lack of adequate amenities catering to their specific needs and acknowledged the multifaceted roles they often balance, including household responsibilities and professional careers. He emphasized the importance of supportive policies and environments within legal institutions to facilitate women’s participation and success.

CJI Chandrachud cited practical initiatives such as introducing affordable meals at the Supreme Court, benefiting over 2,000 women employees, as impactful steps towards empowering women in the workplace. He urged the legal fraternity to build on such initiatives, translating them into meaningful actions that promote equitable treatment.

Asserting the importance of diversity and inclusion in strengthening the legal system, Chandrachud highlighted the Supreme Court’s efforts, including designating 313 women as senior counsels in its history, with 12 appointments made earlier this year alone.

Expressing concern over judicial delays and public trust erosion, Chandrachud criticized the perception of routine adjournments in court proceedings. Drawing from popular culture, he referenced the film ‘Jolly LLB’ to illustrate real-world challenges where ethical standards sometimes falter, affecting judicial credibility.

The CJI called for modernizing legal traditions to align with contemporary societal demands and emphasized embracing technological advancements within the legal profession. The event was attended by Supreme Court judges Justice B R Gavai and Justice Dipankar Dutta, along with Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court T S Sivagnanam.

Chandrachud concluded by urging collective efforts to ensure efficient judicial processes that uphold justice without unnecessary delays, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to fostering a fair and accessible legal system.
