New Delhi, 3rd Dec. On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for the year 2024 in a ceremony held in New Delhi.

Congratulating the awardees, President Murmu emphasized the social significance of these awards, stating that they serve as an inspiration for individuals and institutions to work toward empowering persons with disabilities (Divyangjan). She highlighted the need for society to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for Divyangjan to thrive.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” was a focal point of the President’s address. She called for greater efforts to promote entrepreneurship among Divyangjan, develop their skills, create employment opportunities, support their products, and facilitate market access to enhance their leadership potential.

President Murmu stressed that creating a barrier-free environment for Divyangjan must be a societal priority. “The true measure of a sensitive society lies in its ability to provide equal facilities and opportunities to all its members, including Divyangjan,” she remarked.

She also redefined the perception of disability, describing it as a special condition rather than a deficiency. “Divyangjan need empathy, not sympathy; sensitivity, not kindness; and natural affection, not special attention,” the President stated, urging society to ensure equality, dignity, and respect for persons with disabilities.

Highlighting the transformative power of economic inclusion, the President noted that opportunities for employment and enterprise instill self-confidence in Divyangjan and provide them with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. She emphasized that meaningful empowerment can be achieved through economic independence and active participation in society.

The National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities are presented annually to recognize the efforts of individuals, institutions, and organizations that contribute significantly to the empowerment of persons with disabilities. The awards aim to inspire others to foster an inclusive and equitable environment for all.
