Kolkata, 14th March. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today carried out raids at multiple locations in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, as part of an ongoing probe into allegations of land grabbing against Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates.
Accompanied by paramilitary forces, the ED conducted simultaneous raids at four different locations in Sandeshkhali. This move comes in the wake of recent developments, including the arrest of Shahjahan by the Bengal police on charges of land grabbing and sexual abuse.
The allegations, stemming from residents of Sandeshkhali, an island situated in Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, have sparked a political firestorm within the state. Shahjahan’s arrest last month, following a 55-day evasion, escalated tensions between central agencies and the state police over custody jurisdiction.
The power struggle between the two law enforcement entities reached a crescendo when the state police initially declined to hand over Shahjahan, citing the state government’s legal challenge in the Supreme Court. However, the High Court clarified that its order remained valid and directed the Bengal police to transfer Shahjahan’s custody to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
