New Delhi, 7th August. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar highlighted the importance of economic nationalism in fostering India’s economic growth during his address at the 10th National Handloom Day celebration held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
VP Dhankhar highlighted the central role of handloom products in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Be Vocal for Local” initiative and called for a renewed focus on promoting handloom products as part of the Swadeshi movement.
Describing economic nationalism as crucial for economic growth and independence, Dhankhar emphasized the environmental and cultural significance of handlooms.
“Promoting handlooms is essential not only for our country but also for global climate change efforts,” he stated.
The Vice-President urged Indian corporate houses to integrate handloom products into their operations, particularly in the hotel industry. He argued that this would not only enhance the global appeal of Indian culture but also provide significant economic and employment benefits.
Dhankhar outlined three primary benefits of economic nationalism: conserving foreign exchange, creating local job opportunities, and fostering domestic entrepreneurship.
He slammed those prioritizing short-term economic gains over national interests, asserting that no fiscal advantage can surpass the value of supporting domestic industries and local employment.
Reflecting on the historical Swadeshi Movement, which began on August 7, 1905, Dhankhar praised PM Modi’s decision to mark August 7 as National Handloom Day in 2015, commemorating the 110th anniversary of the movement.
The Vice-President’s address reinforced the call for integrating traditional handloom products into modern fashion and industry to sustain and celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage.
