New Delhi, 17th Dec. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has called for a preparatory meeting this week to discuss the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, with sources indicating that the dates will be announced soon after. As the much-anticipated polls draw near, political parties are gearing up for the contest.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has released its full list of candidates for all 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly. Party chief Arvind Kejriwal confirmed that he will contest from the New Delhi constituency, while Chief Minister Atishi will run from Kalkaji.

Meanwhile, the Congress has fielded Sandeep Dikshit, the son of late three-time Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to present Parvesh Verma, son of the late Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, as one of its candidates. The BJP, which has been out of power in Delhi since 1998, is preparing to introduce a number of fresh faces in its candidate list, expected to be released in the final week of this month.

Ahead of the elections, the BJP has launched a robust outreach campaign, focusing on Delhi’s slum areas, which are considered strongholds of the AAP. According to Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, the party has received over 2,000 applications from workers and leaders across all 70 constituencies for the chance to contest the polls.

Sachdeva noted, “A significant enthusiasm for the BJP is being witnessed among various sections of society in Delhi as the city gears up for the assembly elections.” He added that the candidate selection process is well underway, with three potential candidates shortlisted for each constituency.

The BJP is determined to challenge AAP’s dominance in the Delhi Assembly, having won 67 and 62 seats in the 2015 and 2020 elections, respectively. As the campaign intensifies, all eyes are on the Delhi elections, set to take place in February 2024.
