New Delhi, 26th Jan. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday changed the date of the bypolls in the Chinchwad and Kasba Peth assembly constituencies in Maharashtra’s Pune to February 26, a day earlier than previously announced.
The dates were changed after the district election officer informed the authorities that the bypoll dates clashed with Class 12 and graduate degree examinations.
The ECI announced bye-elections to assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and the parliamentary constituency of the UT of Lakshadweep on January 18, with the date set for February 27. On March 2, the votes will be counted.
The ECI stated in its revised notification that the District Election Officer of Pune had reported a clash between the election date and the dates of the Class 12 HSC examination and the graduate degree examination. The Election Commission also noted that various examination centers served as polling stations for assembly constituencies.
“The Commission has considered the matter, ground situation and all other relevant aspects of the matter, and has decided to revise the date of poll for bye-elections to assembly constituencies Chinchwad and Kasba Peth,” it said.
The deadline for nominations is February 7, and the deadline for withdrawal is February 10.
The byelections for Kasba Peth and Chinhcwad were called after the deaths of two BJP legislators, Mukta Tilak on December 22 and Laxman Jagtap on January 3.
Tilak, a descendant of freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak, died due to illness. In 2019, the former mayor of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was elected for the first time to the state legislative assembly. Tilak was a member of the Kasba Peth constituency.
Her death has fueled speculation about who will be the BJP candidate for the seat, which is a party stronghold. Many local leaders, including Hemant Rasane, Ganesh Bidkar, and Dheeraj Ghate, are being considered for Kasba, but Shailesh Tilak, Mukta Tilak’s husband, and former Kothrud legislator Medha Kulkarni are also being considered.
