Bangkok, 18th August. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted shared religious and cultural traditions between India and Thailand on Thursday while visiting a Hindu temple here, the country’s official centre of Hinduism.
On Tuesday, Jaishankar arrived in Bangkok for the 9th India-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting.
“Offered prayers this morning (Thursday) at the Bangkok Devasthana. Received the blessings of Phra Maharajaguru Vidhi. Highlights our shared religious and cultural traditions,” Jaishankar tweeted.
The Thai Royal Court’s Devasathan or Royal Brahmin Office is located near Wat Suthat in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon District. The temple is Thailand’s official Hindu centre.
The Thai Brahmin community is led by Maharajaguru Vidhi.
The Court Brahmins live in the temple and are descended from an ancient lineage of priests from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. Every year, the Brahmins perform numerous important royal and religious ceremonies for Thailand’s Monarchy.
On Wednesday, Jaishankar visited the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist temple, and saw the magnificent Ramayana murals.
On Wednesday, he tweeted, “Our contemporary partnership with Thailand draws so much from history and culture.”
On Wednesday, Jaishankar and Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Don Pramudwinai, jointly inaugurated the Indian Embassy Residence Complex in Bangkok.
“Congratulations to Ambassador @IndiainThailand and her team on an excellent project delivery,” he wrote on Twitter.
