Duraiswamy Appointed Acting Chief Justice of Madras HC

New Delhi, 6th September. President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice M. Duraiswamy, the Madras High Court’s senior-most Judge, as Acting Chief Justice, effective September 13, 2022, following the retirement of Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari.

According to the notification issued in this regard, “In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Shri Justice M. Duraiswamy, senior-most Judge of the Madras High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court, with effect from 13.09.2022 consequent upon superannuation of Shri Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari, Chief Justice, Madras High Court.”

Born on September 22, 1960, Justice Duraiswamy did B.L. degree in Madras Law College after completing his B. Com degree and was enrolled to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on January 21, 1987.

Worked as a junior under former Chhattisgarh High Court Chief Justice A.S.Venkatachala Moorthy.

He worked as a lawyer in the Madras High Court.

He served as Central Government Standing Counsel from 1997 to 2000.

On 31.03.2009, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Madras, and on 29.03.2011, he was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Madras.
