Duplicate EPIC Numbers Do Not Mean Fake Voters: EC Clarifies

New Delhi- The Election Commission (EC) has clarified that duplication in Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers does not indicate fake or duplicate voters. This comes after concerns were raised on social media regarding identical EPIC numbers assigned to electors from different states.

The EC explained that while some electors may share the same EPIC number due to a previously decentralized system, their demographic details, polling stations, and assembly constituencies remain distinct. Voters can only cast their vote at their designated polling station within their registered state or union territory.

The issue arose before the electoral roll database was centralized under the ERONET platform, leading to certain state election offices using identical alphanumeric series. To prevent further duplication, the EC has decided to assign unique EPIC numbers to all registered voters, with ERONET 2.0 facilitating the rectification process.
