Drunk Dumper Driver Kills Three, Including Two Toddlers, in Pune Tragedy

Pune, 23rd Dec. A horrific accident in Pune’s Wagholi area claimed the lives of three people, including two toddlers, after a dumper ran over nine people sleeping on a footpath late Sunday night. The victims, all construction laborers, had arrived in the city earlier that day from Amravati.

The deceased were identified as Vishal Vinod Pawar (22), Vaibhavi Ritesh Pawar (1), and Vaibhav Ritesh Pawar (2). Six others sustained severe injuries, three of whom are in critical condition. The injured include Janki Dinesh Pawar (21), Rinisha Vinod Pawar (18), Roshan Shashadu Bhosle (9), Nagesh Nivrutti Pawar (27), Darshan Sanjay Vairal (18), and Alisha Vinod Pawar (47).

The incident occurred around 12:30 am when the dumper driver, identified as Gajanan Shankar Totre (26), allegedly lost control of the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The dumper veered onto the footpath where the victims were sleeping, leaving a trail of devastation.

An eyewitness who survived the crash recounted the chaos. “We went to sleep around 11 pm. Around 1 am, I woke up to the sound of the dumper. There was chaos, blood everywhere. We had just arrived from Amravati to work at a construction site after harvesting soybean crops.”

Emergency responders rushed the injured to Inox Hospital for initial treatment, but they were later transferred to Sassoon Hospital for further care. The bodies of the deceased were also sent to Sassoon Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Senior police officials, including ACP Khade and ACP Sonwane, visited the scene of the tragedy. Police have arrested the driver, Gajanan Shankar Totre, and filed a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against him. The investigation is being led by PI Vaponi Pandit Rejitwad, who stated that further details are being examined.

The victims were part of a group of laborers who had come to Pune in search of work, planning to start their jobs at a construction site the next morning. Their plans were tragically cut short by the accident.

The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and activists, who are calling for stricter enforcement of laws against drunk driving. Meanwhile, the families of the victims face an unimaginable loss as they await further developments in the investigation.

This heartbreaking accident serves as yet another reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the need for urgent action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
