Ahmedabad, 20th Jan. Billionaire entrepreneur Gautam Adani, who transformed a small diamond trading venture into a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure empire, shared key moments from his remarkable journey at the Adani International School on Monday. At 62, Adani, now the world’s 19th richest person with a wealth of $76 billion, recounted his first trade at the age of 19, making a commission of Rs 10,000.
Born in Ahmedabad, Adani’s entrepreneurial journey began at 16 when he moved to Mumbai and joined a diamond assortment company. By 1981, at just 19, he made his first commission, marking the start of his business career. He later ventured into commodities trading and founded Adani Exports in 1988, which eventually evolved into Adani Enterprises.
Adani’s business empire has since expanded across various sectors, including power, renewable energy, mining, ports, airports, and media. Reflecting on his life, Adani shared how he started with limited resources and connections, driven only by his dream to build something meaningful.
Despite never attending college, Adani emphasized the importance of education, stating, “To acquire wisdom, one must experience life—but to acquire knowledge, one must study.” He added that while he doesn’t regret not completing college, he recognizes how formal education could have expanded his abilities even faster.
He also addressed the role of resilience in success, saying, “The only difference between ordinary and extraordinary success is resilience—the courage to rise after every fall.” Adani encouraged students to dream relentlessly, learn continuously, and build something larger than themselves, urging them to solve global challenges and innovate in ways that inspire future generations.
Adani’s message to the students was clear: “Let this classroom be the launchpad for your aspirations.” He shared his vision for the next generation, hoping to see “100 Gautam Adanis emerge from here,” but not just following his path—creating their own legacy.
