Bhubaneswar, 1st May. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a significant milestone with the successful flight test of the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system. The test took place at approximately 0830 hrs on May 1, 2024, off the coast of Odisha from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island.
SMART is a cutting-edge missile-based lightweight torpedo delivery system developed to bolster the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy. It surpasses the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes, marking a significant advancement in naval defense technology.
The canister-based missile system comprises advanced sub-systems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precision inertial navigation system.
Equipped with an advanced lightweight torpedo payload and a parachute-based release system, SMART underwent validation of state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control during the test.
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh praised DRDO and its industry partners for the successful flight test, emphasizing that the development of SMART will bolster the Navy’s capabilities.
Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, Dr. Samir V Kamat, commended the collaborative efforts of the SMART team and encouraged them to maintain their pursuit of excellence.”
