New Delhi, 21st June. Draupadi Murmu, the former Governor of Jharkhand, has been named as a Presidential candidate for the upcoming elections by the BJP-led NDA on Tuesday.
The decision was made at a meeting of the BJP’s parliamentary board, which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing a press conference, BJP president JP Nadda said that after extensive consultations with NDA allies, it was felt that the Presidential candidate should come from the Northeast and be a woman tribal candidate.
Senior BJP leaders JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, and others were present at the meeting.
PM Modi tweeted, “Draupadi Murmu has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, downtrodden as well as the marginalised. She has rich administrative experience and had an outstanding gubernatorial tenure. I am confident she will be a great President of our nation.”
Murmu is the country’s first significant tribal female presidential contender. She will be India’s first tribal President and the country’s second female President if she is elected.
She is the first significant Presidential candidate from Odisha, and if won, she will be the country’s first President from the state.
