New Delhi, 31st August. Dr. T.V. Somanathan has officially taken over as the new Cabinet Secretary in the Government of India, following the superannuation of Shri Rajiv Gauba. Dr. Somanathan, an IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre (1987 batch), holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Calcutta University and has completed the Executive Development Program at Harvard Business School. He is also a fully qualified Chartered Accountant, Cost Accountant, and Company Secretary.
Dr. Somanathan has an extensive background in public service, having held significant roles at the Centre, including Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. He also served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and was Director, Corporate Affairs at the World Bank in Washington DC. Before his new role as Cabinet Secretary, he served as Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Expenditure.
In Tamil Nadu, Dr. Somanathan has held key positions such as Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., Secretary to the Chief Minister, and Additional Chief Secretary & Commissioner of Commercial Taxes during the GST rollout. He was instrumental in the financial closure and initial tendering for the Chennai Metro Rail Project as its founder Managing Director.
Dr. Somanathan’s international experience includes joining the World Bank in 1996 as a Financial Economist in the East Asia & Pacific Regional Vice Presidency, where he became one of the youngest Sector Managers. He returned to the World Bank as Director from 2011 to 2015.
A prolific writer, Dr. Somanathan has published over 80 papers and articles on economics, finance, and public policy and is the author of three books published by McGraw Hill, Cambridge, and Oxford University Press.
