Doctors Must Be Compassionate Healers, Not Just Physicians: President Murmu

New Delhi, 24th Dec. President Droupadi Murmu attended the convocation ceremony of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, where she emphasized the profound responsibility that the medical profession entails.

In her address, the President underscored that medicine is not merely a profession but a noble endeavor to alleviate suffering and enhance societal well-being. She highlighted the dual role of doctors as both skilled physicians and compassionate healers, reminding them that patients often seek solace beyond medical treatment, needing encouragement and empathy in their journey between fear and hope.

The President stressed the growing importance of technology in medicine, urging institutions like Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital to collaborate with engineering and technology institutes. She cited innovations in Artificial Intelligence, mRNA technology, robotics, and 3D bioprinting as transformative forces in healthcare, advocating for interdisciplinary research and knowledge-sharing to advance medical science.

Acknowledging the government’s strides toward a healthier India, the President lauded the nation’s healthcare initiatives, which are beginning to yield tangible results. However, she called for dedicated efforts from skilled doctors to maximize the impact of the healthcare infrastructure.

President Murmu also reflected on India’s aspirations to become a developed nation by 2047, asserting that young doctors would play a pivotal role in achieving this vision. She encouraged them to contribute through education, research, and entrepreneurship, aiming to position India as a global leader in healthcare.

Highlighting Safdarjung Hospital’s significant role, the President noted its service to over 10,000 patients daily from across the country. She praised the hospital’s continuous advancements, including affordable state-of-the-art treatments such as robotic renal transplants, robotic cardiothoracic surgeries, and bone marrow transplants, which exemplify its commitment to patient care and innovation.
