New Delhi, 23rd Dec. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to submit a proposal to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the construction of a crucial 5-kilometer corridor aimed at connecting Noida International Airport (NIAL) with Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). The proposal, which is expected to streamline travel between two major airports in the national capital region, will be reviewed by CM Yogi, with the future of the project depending on securing funding, as confirmed by Arun Vir Singh, CEO of Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
Singh mentioned that the original plan to link NIAL with IGI via the expressway had been shelved in favor of a rapid rail option. This alternative 72-kilometer corridor would connect Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, and Noida airport, a decision that reflects the shifting focus towards high-speed rail as a means of ensuring smoother airport connectivity.
In addition to this new airport link, DMRC is planning a short corridor connecting Kalindi Kunj and Tughlakabad as part of the Rs 950 crore Aerocity-Tughlakabad connectivity project. The project, aimed for completion in the next three years, will provide vital interchange facilities, connecting with the Blue Line, Magenta Line, Aqua Line, and a proposed new line from Botanical Garden to Noida’s Sector 142.
Meanwhile, the Noida International Airport, expected to be inaugurated in 2025, will initially serve 12 million passengers annually once its first phase is completed in April 2025. This new airport will complement Delhi’s existing airport, which has an annual capacity of 73.6 million, while Mumbai and Bengaluru airports currently handle 52.8 million and 37.5 million passengers, respectively.
As the government moves forward with these ambitious plans for airport connectivity, the DMRC’s proposal promises to ease transit times for travelers, fostering more seamless connections between India’s rapidly growing airport hubs.
