Bengaluru, 16th August. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed on Thursday that he will be the Congress candidate for the upcoming Channapatna Assembly bypoll. Speaking during Independence Day celebrations in Channapatna, Shivakumar, who is also the Karnataka Congress chief, raised the national flag in the constituency for the first time, underscoring his political ambitions.
Shivakumar’s confirmation comes amid speculation about potential candidates. Although he currently represents Kanakapura, the bypoll was triggered by the election of the former Channapatna MLA, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, to the Lok Sabha.
The Deputy Chief Minister dismissed earlier rumors that his brother, DK Suresh, might be fielded for Channapatna. Shivakumar hinted at a possible seat swap if he wins, which could see him vacate Kanakapura for Suresh.
Shivakumar criticized Kumaraswamy for not attending local Independence Day celebrations, suggesting the former MLA lacked commitment to the constituency. He expressed confidence in the Congress’s chances, emphasizing the party’s historical ties to the region and the development work he plans to undertake.
In response, BJP and JD(S) are expected to field candidates including BJP MLC CP Yogeeshwara and Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of HD Kumaraswamy. Yogeeshwara, a past MLA for the seat, has expressed strong interest in contesting, potentially as an independent if not selected by the alliance.
The Election Commission has yet to announce the bypoll schedule.
