Chandigarh, 14th Oct. Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is currently serving a prison sentence in Haryana’s Sunaria jail, has been granted parole for 40 days.

The move comes just days before the Adampur bypoll, which is scheduled for November 3.

In June, the Dera chief was released from prison on a month’s parole.

He had previously been granted three weeks’ furlough in February.

The sect’s chief is serving a 20-year prison sentence for raping two female disciples at his ashram in Sirsa, where the Dera is based. In August 2017, he was found guilty by a special CBI court in Panchkula.

He was also convicted last year, along with four others, of plotting to murder Ranjit Singh, a Dera manager, in 2002. In 2019, the Dera chief and three others were convicted of the murder of a journalist over 16 years ago.
