Delhi Court Sentences Woman to Life for Smothering Her Two Daughters

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 5th Sept. A Delhi court has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of her two young daughters in 2018, describing the act as a “cold-blooded murder” and one of the “rarest of rare” cases. The court’s decision, delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Sachin Jain at Tis Hazari court, reflects the gravity of the crime and its impact on societal perceptions of motherhood.

Leelawati (32), who had previously been convicted for the murders, smothered her daughters, aged five years and five months, on February 20, 2018. The court noted that the gruesome nature of the crime deeply affected its conscience, as mothers are typically idolized for their nurturing and selfless roles.

Judge Jain explained that although the crime was horrific, a life sentence was deemed more appropriate than the death penalty due to the presence of Leelawati’s two surviving children—a daughter aged seven and a son aged two. The court considered the potential impact of removing their mother from their lives and the possibility of Leelawati’s rehabilitation and reintegration into society after serving a substantial term.

In addition to the life sentence, Leelawati was fined ₹10,000. The court also ruled out any compensation under the Delhi Victims Compensation Scheme, citing that the “beneficiary was the culprit” and noting the unique and disturbing nature of the case.
