New Delhi, 21st August. A Delhi court has requested the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to respond to an application for regular bail filed by Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid. Rashid, a Kashmiri parliamentarian who won against former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has been in jail since 2019.
The application pertains to Rashid’s arrest in a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case, where he faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh issued the notice to the NIA on August 20, directing it to file a response by August 28.
Rashid was granted custody parole on July 5 to take the oath of office. His name emerged during the investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested by the NIA for allegedly funding terrorist groups and separatists.
The NIA’s charge sheet in the case includes notable figures such as Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin. Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in 2022 after pleading guilty to the charges. Rashid is currently detained in Tihar Jail.
