New Delhi, 22nd Dec. A Delhi court has granted Congress MP Karti Chidambaram permission to travel to Austria and the UK between January 4 and 12. The decision, issued by Special Judge Kaveri Baweja on December 17, comes despite objections from the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Karti Chidambaram, an accused in the INX Media case, sought permission to attend events related to his company in Vienna and to visit his daughter in the UK. The court noted that he has consistently adhered to the terms set during previous permissions to travel abroad.

“It is a matter of record that the applicant had sought permission of the court to travel abroad on numerous earlier occasions, and the same was always granted to him even by the Supreme Court, as well as by this court, and he never abused the above concession or liberty granted by the court,” Judge Baweja observed.

The ED, represented by Special Public Prosecutor NK Matta, opposed the application, citing concerns that Karti Chidambaram might misuse the liberty. However, the court allowed the plea, emphasizing the applicant’s record of compliance.

The INX Media case, filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in May 2017, involves allegations of irregularities in granting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to the INX Media group in 2007. The group received foreign funding worth ₹305 crore during the tenure of Karti’s father, P. Chidambaram, as Union Finance Minister. Both Karti and P. Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, are accused in the case.
