New Delhi, 19th March. A Delhi court has instructed Tihar Jail officials to escort Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh, who is currently detained in connection with the excise scam case, to Parliament on Tuesday so he can be sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member.
Special Judge M K Nagpal has directed the jail superintendent to ensure adequate security during Singh’s transportation.
The judge’s order stated, “The Jail Superintendent must ensure that the accused is taken to Parliament on 19.03.2024 under tight security for the purpose of taking the oath as a Member. After the oath, he must be safely returned to the jail.”
In a ruling issued on March 16, the judge specified that Singh will not be allowed to use a mobile phone, communicate with any other accused individuals, suspects, or witnesses in this case, or in the related CBI case. He is also prohibited from speaking to the press or holding public meetings.
However, he may meet with his legal counsel and family members during the visit. The judge granted Singh an exemption from appearing in court on March 19, when the case is scheduled for further proceedings.
Sanjay Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case related to the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. He is currently in judicial custody.
The ED’s investigation was initiated based on a CBI case, focusing on the money laundering aspect of the alleged scam. The CBI case alleges that irregularities occurred during the modification of the excise policy, resulting in undue benefits to license-holders. These individuals allegedly diverted illegal profits to the accused officials and falsified their accounting records to avoid detection.
