New Delhi, 11th May. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wasted no time as he emerged from Tihar Jail, immediately immersing himself in election fervor. Just a day after being granted interim bail by the Supreme Court, Kejriwal is set to embark on a roadshow today, rallying supporters and emphasizing the need to “save the country from dictatorship”.
The interim bail, extended until June 1, allows Kejriwal to actively participate in campaigning for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. As a prominent figure in the INDIA alliance, positioned as a rival to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kejriwal’s return to the political arena is anticipated to energize his party’s electoral efforts.
Addressing a crowd of over 1,000 jubilant supporters upon his release, Kejriwal reaffirmed his commitment to fighting against what he perceives as authoritarian rule. His itinerary for the day includes visits to the Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place and a roadshow in South Delhi, culminating in a press conference at the Aam Aadmi Party office.
With the fourth phase of polling scheduled for May 13 and voting on all seven Lok Sabha seats in New Delhi set for May 25, Kejriwal’s reentry into the campaign spotlight is poised to shape the political landscape in the national capital.
The news of Kejriwal’s release sparked celebrations within the INDIA bloc parties, with AAP hailing it as a “triumph of truth”. However, amidst the rejoicing, Home Minister Amit Shah sought to temper the mood, emphasizing that Kejriwal’s release was interim in nature and invoking past allegations of corruption against the Delhi government.
The excise scam, centered around the liberalization of liquor sale policies in 2021 and subsequent allegations of corrupt licensing practices, continues to cast a shadow over Kejriwal’s tenure, with two of his close allies already facing imprisonment as a result of the investigation.
